How can you recognise stainless steel?

Most grades (e.g. 304, 316) are not attracted to a magnet or react only very slightly — this is the simplest home test for distinguishing them from ordinary steel. The surface remains shiny even after years of use, unlike ordinary carbon steel.

We confirm the exact grade and nickel/chromium content by XRF analysis before providing a quotation.

Purchase of stainless steel, acid-resistant and heat-resistant steel

We purchase stainless steel, acid-resistant steel, heat-resistant steel and high-temperature-resistant steel. We are interested in virtually all grades containing nickel. The price of acid-resistant steel depends on the content of alloying elements, which is why we price each batch individually.

Stainless steel, heat-resistant steel and high-temperature-resistant steel – how do they differ?

  • Stainless steel – steel that is resistant to corrosion thanks to its chromium content, which forms a thin, self-regenerating passive layer on the surface.
  • Heat-resistant steel – retains its resistance to oxidation and the corrosive effects of gases at high temperatures thanks to a protective layer of scale.
  • Heat-resistant steel – retains its mechanical and structural properties at very high temperatures, whilst remaining easy to machine.

What types of stainless steel scrap do we accept?

  • Chromium-nickel steel (acid-resistant) – mainly sheet metal, pipes and household items; free from contamination by other metals and organic substances.
  • Chrome steel – at the scrapyard, most commonly in the form of sheet metal and washing machine drums; cleaned of ordinary steel and other metals.
  • Stainless steel swarf – produced by turning and milling, without any admixtures of other metals.

Chemical composition and classification of corrosion-resistant steels

The main alloying elements in stainless steels are chromium, nickel and molybdenum, as well as titanium, niobium, copper, manganese, silicon, aluminium, carbon and nitrogen. Based on their composition, stainless steels are classified as chromium steels, chromium-nickel steels, chromium-nickel-molybdenum steels and chromium-manganese-nickel steels.

Stainless steel purchasing – price

The price of stainless steel scrap depends primarily on the grade and the nickel, chromium and molybdenum content. The cheapest grades are those with the lowest nickel content, whilst the most expensive are heat-resistant and high-temperature-resistant steels with a high nickel content. We confirm the grade by XRF analysis before quoting a price.
