The main types of bronze

Classification

Bronze 101

Bronze 101

The highest-grade bronze – pure bronze in the form of ingots, bars and tubes, free from impurities and admixtures of other alloys.

Non-magnetic bronzes

Non-magnetic bronzes

Bronzes that are not attracted to a magnet – including bushings, bearings and gear wheels. The material should be free from steel and other metals. Magnetic and mixed bronzes form a separate, cheaper grade.

Brown shavings

Brown shavings

Machining swarf with a metal content of at least 70%. It should be as dry as possible, free from emulsions and ferrous contaminants – moisture and oil reduce the valuation.

4.

Weighing and payment

Once the raw material has been delivered, we weigh it and check it.

How can you recognise bronze?

It has a warmer, more reddish-brown hue than brass and is noticeably heavier and harder than pure copper. It is not attracted to a magnet. When struck, it produces a duller, less resonant sound than brass.

We confirm the alloy composition (tin content, presence of zinc or lead) by XRF analysis before providing a quotation.

Bronze scrap collection – types and prices

We buy and sell all types of bronze scrap, both non-magnetic and magnetic. Bronze is an alloy of copper and tin with a reddish-brown colour, but it often contains other metals as well, which is why we analyse every batch using a spectrometer. The bronze supplied must be free from steel, aluminium and other metals that foundries do not accept.

What types of bronze do we accept?

  • Magnetic bronze – it has a darker, brownish hue and is attracted to a magnet. It contains significantly less copper, which is why it is valued lower than non-magnetic bronze.
  • Non-magnetic bronze – with a high copper content, it is not attracted to a magnet and commands a higher price.
  • Bronze shavings – purchased on the basis of an analysis of their composition and moisture content, free from free iron and other impurities.
  • Other species – tin bronze, aluminium bronze, manganese bronze, lead bronze, cobalt bronze and other alloys.

What determines the price of bronze?

The purchase price of bronze depends on its alloy – that is, its copper, tin and additive content – as well as on any impurities. It is best to deliver scrap sorted into the following categories: magnetic bronze, non-magnetic bronze and shavings. Following consultation with a sales representative, we can also separate the material into individual alloys and price them separately. The price list is based on LME copper and tin prices, the euro exchange rate and market conditions, and may change several times a day; for larger deliveries, we set the price on a case-by-case basis.
