The main grades of copper

Classification

Millbera

Millbera

Milber is a raw material derived from recycled cables. The conductor thickness must be greater than 1 mm. Scrap in this grade commands the highest price and is characterised by the highest purity. This scrap must not contain any inorganic impurities or other scrap. The material must not be oxidised. This copper offers the highest profit potential, but its purity must be perfect. The purity of this copper should be 99.95%.

Copper in ingots I

Copper in ingots I

Copper in ingots: this is pure, shiny copper, free from any impurities, whether in bulk or in an alloy. Its origin is crucial here.
This is copper that does not come from cables but is just as pure. It may include flat bars, luminous tubes, traction cables or oxidised Milber copper. The purity of this copper should be above 99%.

Copper in pieces II

Copper in pieces II

Copper Grade II is very similar to Grade I, but with the difference that it may contain impurities in the form of paint or isolated tin solder, and may be oxidised on the surface (not shiny). This grade includes tubes, flat bars, sheets and other products. The purity of this copper should be at least 97%.

White-painted copper

White-painted copper

Copper coated with a thin layer of tin – silvery on the outside, copper-coloured in cross-section. This category includes, amongst other things, white-coated ropes and wires, as well as tubes. Due to its coating, it is valued lower than bright copper.

How can you recognise copper?

Pure copper has a characteristic red-orange colour and is not attracted to a magnet. Oxidised copper develops a green or brown patina, which does not reduce its value but does affect its classification. Copper is also noticeably heavier than aluminium for the same volume, which helps to quickly distinguish between the two metals when assessing scrap.

Copper scrap collection – other types and prices

We buy copper scrap in any form, shape and purity. In addition to the grades described above – Milber copper, lump copper and bleached copper – we also accept copper granules and copper heavily contaminated with, for example, soil, plastic or other metals.

What other types of copper do we buy?

  • Copper scrap, grade III („unsorted”) – containing impurities permanently bound to the material, e.g. lacquered copper, soldered tubes or copper alloys. It must not contain any loose waste from other metals. We assess its purity and the type of impurities on each delivery.
  • Copper shavings – from the turning and machining of copper. We always check their moisture content, which we deduct from the weight of the material.
  • Copper granules – from recycled cables, as described on the website purchase of copper and aluminium granules.
  • Other types of copper – materials with a high content of other metals or inorganic impurities: copper scrap, used lead-copper cartridges, copper „scrap”, „stoves”, copper-nickel alloys and silver-plated copper.

Copper scrap collection – price

The purchase price of copper depends primarily on its purity and the type of impurities – Milber copper commands the highest price. Heavily contaminated copper must be processed using metal recycling machinery, which reduces its value. The copper price quoted on the LME (London Metal Exchange) is the price of pure metal on the exchange, not the purchase price: the price for scrap is determined by the LME, the euro exchange rate, the purity of the material and market conditions.
