The main types of lead

Classification

Pure lead

Pure lead

Lead in the form of lumps, pipes, sheets and castings, free from paint, impurities and steel components. This is the highest-grade lead.

Impure lead and remelted lead

Impure lead and remelted lead

Lead that is contaminated or contains residues of other materials, as well as remelted lead and lead dross. We verify the metal content upon receipt of the material.

Weighing and payment

Once the raw material has been delivered, we weigh it and check it.

How can you recognise lead?

You’ll recognise it by its high density (it’s surprisingly heavy for its size), its matt grey colour and its softness — you can easily scratch it with your fingernail. A freshly cut piece of lead has a distinctive silvery sheen, which quickly turns grey when exposed to the air.

We check the origin and purity of the lead (e.g. from batteries vs. from cables) before providing a quote.

Lead purchasing – types and prices

Among the non-ferrous metals we purchase is lead in all its forms. It is a heavy, soft metal with a silvery-grey colour, which is easy to shape and resistant to corrosion – it forms a protective oxide layer on its surface, although it reacts with acids.

What sort of lead do we buy?

  • Cable lead – from recycled cables; may contain antimony. It must not be greasy or contaminated with other metals; trace amounts of paper are permitted.
  • Dirty lead wrapped in jute – including lead from recycled cables, contaminated with tar, glue or jute (plant fibre). We value lead containing jute at a lower price than dirty lead.
  • Lead granules – fine granules and flakes from recycled cables. It may contain trace amounts of copper, but must not be oily or contaminated with inorganic substances.
  • Lead weights and counterweights – including, amongst other things, wheel-balancing weights.

Lead purchasing – price

The price of scrap lead depends on its type and level of contamination: we pay the highest price for pure lead and cable lead, and the lowest for lead mixed with jute. The benchmark is the lead price quoted on the LME (London Metal Exchange) – however, this is the metal’s market price, not the purchase price. The final rate is also influenced by the euro exchange rate and demand for lead scrap.

What is lead used for?

Lead is used primarily in car batteries, in radiation shielding (e.g. in radiotherapy) and in soldering and tinning alloys. In the past, its compounds were also used in the production of white pigments for paints.
