Radiometric surveys and the search for sources of radiation

We carry out screening measurements of materials, equipment, scrap metal and selected areas to detect the presence of ionising radiation. These measurements may include alpha, beta, gamma, X-ray and neutron radiation. We select the method and detector appropriate to the type of object being tested and the purpose of the measurement.
These measurements help to detect elevated readings, identify areas requiring further inspection and make a preliminary assessment as to whether the material should undergo additional testing. They can form part of incoming goods checks, equipment inspections, post-production material reviews and exploratory activities.

What measurements do we carry out?

Measurement range

α

Alpha radiation

Inspection of the surfaces of materials and objects for the presence of alpha emitters. This type of measurement requires a suitable detector and adequate access to the surface under examination — factors such as distance, moisture, surface roughness and shielding of the source may affect the result.

β

Beta radiation

Screening of the surfaces of materials, equipment and waste to detect elevated beta readings. The selection of the probe and interpretation of the results take into account, amongst other things, the energy of the radiation and the potential influence of gamma background on the reading.

γ

Gamma radiation

Field and monitoring measurements of materials, equipment and the environment. Depending on the equipment used and the purpose of the test, these may include the assessment of readings or dose rates, the localisation of the source, and gamma-ray spectrum analysis to aid in the identification of radionuclides.

n

Neutron radiation

Monitoring measurements using detectors designed for neutron radiation. These can assist in the search for and initial assessment of objects or areas requiring further verification. Neutron radiation requires a separate detector and measurement procedure.

X

X-rays

Monitoring measurements of X-ray radiation in the vicinity of equipment and installations that utilise X-rays. The survey may be used for an initial inspection of a specified location or piece of equipment to check for the presence of radiation and to identify areas requiring further verification. The scope of the measurement is selected according to the type of equipment, operating conditions and the purpose of the inspection.

Search and location

How we work

Within the agreed scope, we can carry out measurements at designated points or scan a specified object, batch of material or area in order to detect elevated readings and narrow down their location. We determine the scope of work prior to the survey, based on the type of material, the information available and the purpose of the measurement.

Upon completion, we provide a summary of the readings, a description of the measurement conditions and an indication of any locations or samples requiring further verification. If radionuclide identification, quantitative activity determination or a formal conformity assessment is required, the scope and location of the test must be confirmed on a case-by-case basis.

What does the test involve?

4 simple steps

1.

Contact

You are describing a material, a device or an area that requires inspection.
2.

Scope of work

We determine the purpose of the measurement, identify the information required and select a detector.
3.

Measurements

We take measurements at designated points or search the premises.
4.

Summary

We are providing the readings and highlighting areas for further verification.
