Steel scrap - interesting facts
Producing one tonne of steel from scrap leads to a reduction in energy consumption of up to 84%. In addition, recycling steel saves 40% of water, and significantly reduces air emissions (by 86%) and water pollution
(by 76%).
Steel can be recycled many times without loss of quality. In addition, thanks to magnetic sorting technology, it is relatively easy to recover.
The symbol of the 2012 Summer Olympics, the 115-metre high ArcelorMittal Orbit tower, which provides an excellent vantage point over London's Olympic Park, in 60% was constructed from recycled steel. The structure was designed by Kapoor Anish and Cecil Balmond. The construction sponsor was the world's leading steel producer, ArcelorMittal.
Steel structures are much more environmentally friendly than, for example, structures made of reinforced concrete. Metal recovery for steel structures is a minimum of 80%. Meanwhile, the recovery of reinforced concrete from a structure is just 10% of the material used.
