Waste Codes: Key Tools in Waste Management

EWC waste codes

Waste management is one of the key challenges of modern society, which requires a coordinated and efficient approach at international level. In this context, the Basel Waste Codes and the EWC Codes (European Waste Catalogues) are becoming key tools that enable the uniform and precise classification of different types of waste.

Basel Waste Codes:

The Basel Waste Codes were introduced by the Basel Convention to regulate transboundary movements of waste and minimise their negative impacts on human health and the environment. These alphanumeric designations accurately identify the type and source of waste, facilitating effective global waste management.

European Waste Catalogues:

The EWC Codes, or European Waste Catalogues, are a classification system used in the European Union. Like the Basel Waste Codes, the EWC Codes are used to identify and classify waste, but with a focus on the specific needs of the European economic area. They cover a wide range of substances and materials, thus facilitating a uniform approach to waste management across member states.
EWC (European Waste Catalogue) waste codes, also known as WN codes (Waste Code Numbers), are very important in the context of waste management, recycling, transport and disposal.
In general, EWC waste codes consist of six digits, with the first three being the main code and the next three being the secondary code.

Here's how to read the waste codes:

Main code (first three digits): Identifies the general type of waste.
Additional Code (last three digits): Specifies the type of specific waste within the main type.

For example, waste code 170401 means:
17 - Waste from construction, renovation and dismantling of buildings and road infrastructure (including soil and earth from contaminated sites).
17 04 - Metallic and metal alloy waste and scrap.
17 04 01 - Copper, bronze, brass.

Waste codes are used in shipping documentation, waste records, environmental reports or recycling documents, among others. They help to identify the source, type and properties of waste, which is crucial in the process of storage, transport, recycling or disposal.

It is worth noting that the waste category system may vary from region to region and country to country, but in general waste codes are often based on international standards such as those adopted within the European Union.
